12th April 2014 – Pirates see off Hawks to continue solid start

Scarborough Pirates made it two straight wins as they cruised to a 42-2 win at Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks.

Despite not really getting out of first gear in the first half, the away side led 12-2 at half-time, their tries coming through Kieran Tindall and Tom Jenkinson, both converted by the reliable boot of James Millward.

Player-coach Adam Lee went under the posts after the break before tries from Harry Sleep, Oliver Battye and second tries for Jenkinson and Tindall saw the Pirates to a comfortable win.

Millward converted all their trys, and he still has a 100 per cent record this season.

Lee said: “I expected more of a test from them as they’re a big set of lads, and I wanted more of a test.

“The lads did well without being outstanding though.

“We had more opportunities to add to our score, but they were missed.

“Billy Parker was man of the match. He’s just ferocious in the tackle.

“Jack Hakings, James Millward, Alex Conlin and Dave Douthwaite also played well.”

Pirates face Thorn Maruaders on Saturday at Eastway in a friendly, kick-off at 2pm.

The Pirates are also set to lock horns with the Royal Engineers in a tough friendly test next week.

Coach Adam Lee won the Army Cup and toured France with the Engineers during an illustrious spell playing for the side, in which he also stepped out at Twickenham.

Next Thursday’s game at Eastway kicks-off at 6pm.

The bar will be open and a hog roast will also be available.

Lee can’t wait to pit his current Pirates squad against his former team.

He said: “It will be good to see what level we’re at as the Engineers are a very good team traditionally.

“But so are we, it’ll be a good game I’m sure.

“We will be putting a mix of first and A team players out to give them some good experience up against a strong side.”
